RIM launched OS 2.0 for Blackberry Playbook

by Xavier Mory (22 Feb 2012)

Here are some good news for Blackberry tablets owners: RIM Tuesday launched OS 2.0 for Playbook, a major operating system update that brings several new features.

PlayBook OS 2.0's new features include an all-encompassing email client, which groups together messages from Facebook and Twitter with personal and work mail accounts, as well as social networking integration with the Calendar and Contacts apps.

Research in Motion hopes that the update will boost sales of Blackberry tablet. By integrating e-mail, Playbook owners can now have a unified inbox that will display all email accounts.

The update also features improved document editing functions and a host of new applications, including Print To Go and corporate data tool BlackBerry Balance. The PlayBook will also be optimised to run a range of Android apps and host a new video store.

"Building on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's proven web browsing, multimedia and multitasking strengths, the new BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 introduces a range of new communications and productivity enhancements as well as expanded app and content support," said RIM senior vice president David J. Smith.

"We are excited to now offer approximately 10,000 applications specifically for PlayBook, including leading applications like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, Citrix (NSDQ:CTXS), Groupon, Thomson Reuters, Zinio and many more," said RIM spokesperson Jamie Ernst.

Ernst declined to specify how many Android applications will be available to PlayBook OS 2.0 users.

"Only Android applications that have been ported over to the BlackBerry PlayBook platform, and submitted/approved for BlackBerry App World will work on the PlayBook," he said. "We aren't breaking out the specific numbers for Android applications that have been ported over to the PlayBook platform."
