Gartner: iPhone market share will drop

by Xavier Mory (16 Feb 2012)

iPhone market share, which became, at end of the year, the most purchased smartphone in the world, will decrease in coming quarters, as the enthusiasm generated by the 4S model will fall.

iPhone sales have doubled in the last three months of last year, getting Apple to hold 24% of smartphone market, reports Reuters. The advance was determined by the launch of 4S after 15 months of waiting, which led to a huge consumer enthusiasm.

The highly anticipated iPhone 5 - which never was - helped propel the iPhone 4S into record sales, as consumers quickly realised that another incarnation of the iPhone was around a year away. Gartner says, however, that Apple will continue to sell iPhones en masse but will decline in the first quarter, as consumers become more patient for the next iPhone.

Meanwhile, Google's Android accounted for over 50 percent of all smartphone sales, up by 30 percent a year ago. While Android continues to dominate, only Apple and Google's Android were the two platforms that grew in marketshare.

Opposed to Apple's success, former leader of the smartphone market, Nokia saw its market share reduced from 30% to 12% in a single year.

Gartner said that the advance of mobile phones market will slow this year due to reduced consumer demand, caused by the economic environment problem.
